How Can I Manage My Stress

If you’re anything like us, stress can get the best of you every once in a while. Sometimes it’s the big presentation that’s due, other times it’s the spilled coffee, the traffic jam, the sick kid AND the rescheduled appointment that stack up over the course of the day to leave you feeling a little bit less than your best.

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to manage stress if you happen to find yourself experiencing some of the negative symptoms. And, managing your stress can have health benefits. Some things you may want to try are:

  • Regular physical activity

  • Mindfulness or meditation

  • Keeping a sense of humor

  • Spending quality time with family and friends

  • Hobbies

Managing stress can come in all different shapes and sizes. But, be wary of the potentially harmful “stress relief” activities that might seem relaxing but that can increase your stress in the long term. These activities may include; watching TV, surfing the internet, playing video games or scrolling through your social media feed and have been shown to increase cortisol (the stress hormone) and prevent the production of melatonin (the hormone that tells our body when it’s time to sleep.)

Finally, but perhaps most importantly, getting enough sleep and paying attention to your nutrition are excellent ways to manage your stress in a healthy way. On the flipside, always avoid tobacco use, excess caffeine and alcohol, and the use of any other illicit substances.

Even if you’re careful to follow the steps above stress can still be tough to manage. Try stressballs DAY to help focus, destress and reenergize* or stressballs NIGHT to help you relax, destress and sleep*.
